In Māori, ikura refers to menstruation (a period) and is a name derived from the ancient saying "Mai i Kurawaka," meaning "from Kurawaka". This connection signifies that menstrual blood is a sacred symbol of life, whakapapa (genealogy) and the continuation of family. The term connects to traditional beliefs about the sacredness (tapu) of women and their menstrual cycle, offering a celebratory and respectful view of menstruation.
